A Productive Homestead week

We Finally DOVE in and took care of our chicken house/ rabbit house-- it was a HUGE JOB!! (or at least looked like one!!) I don't think it had been cleaned out in YEARS--- actually I know it hadn't-- because Jason asked the previous owners-- and they said- "it was getting to be too big a job-- so they just kept adding more wood shavings!"

So Thursday we dove in (well Jason went in-- I ran the wheelbarrow) and we got it ALL cleaned out (including some dead chickens that were burried!!)---- and we cleaned the top half off so we could put our rabbits up there--- (that part was full of shavings and chicken pieces too)

So we moved our 2 doe rabbits over-- and later today Jason and Zachary will be going to purchase our buck rabbit!! Then we will "BE IN BUSINESS" -- literally!! LOL

I think by the end of the month we will be buying 12 laying chickens too-- we wanted more-- but 12 will get us by-- -and then maybe we can get some chicks closer to spring.

It is all very exciting!!

We seem to be coming together with a REAL VISION for our "farm". I think seeing the ad for 22 Boer Goats in a GOOD price range-- really humbled us because we were NOT ready for them-- but oh how we wanted a few of them---- but now we know we need to get things in order -- both physcially and financially so that NEXT time the opportunity comes available-- we will be ready!!!

I will try to come back and post some homestead pics here soon... after all that MANURE-- I have been thinking more gardening ideas too...

Check this little handy tool our!!

I'm told one of my good friends from church has this tool-- I am not surprised-- I have so much to learn from my friends here-- they are GREAT gardeners-- and really do grow enough for their Large(R) familys to live off of all year long!!

Here is a free version of the above-- it takes a little sweat equity-- but would get the same job done!!

Newspaper Starter Pots

This is all so new to me-- as I have never had great results the 1 time we started our garden with seeds-- but now that we are learning about hybrid vs. heirloom seeds-- we do see the "need".
